The sudden collapse of a massive star when its central temperature falls and the internal pressure pushing outwards is no longer sufficient to balance the inward gravitational force. The gravitational collapse of a massive evolved star is very sudden and catastrophic, perhaps taking less than a second. The enormous energy released triggers a supernova explosion, and the core of the collapsed star may become a neutron star, pulsar or black hole.
